===> ARCHIVES OF THE FUTURE <====

Which archive for the future? Preparing the ground for tomorrow's archives.

Archaeology of the future. Listening to the whispers of the city.

You have personal archives (family and/or neighbourhood), you have always wanted to use them, but you don't know when, how and with whom? You have access to remarkable stories/persons who have stories/archives to collect and show to the world? You are researchers, artists, students, citizens, town planners, architects, archives enthusiasts and you want to carry out a survey on specific archives (personal, family, neighbourhood, your institution's)? You are a manager and/or retired factory/workshop/store owner and you think that the history of these places deserves to be put into images, staged and exhibited? Do you work in a public institution whose archives you think it would be useful to promote? Are you a pupil, parent, teacher or former pupil who wants to investigate the archives of your school?  This call is for you.

L’OBSERVATOIRE wants to give space to all these projects to take shape and develop. The concern of the archive and its valorization is at the heart of the work around the memory of Casablanca's districts. Through this call, we want to raise interest in the collection, enhancement and reactivation of archives in order to build a collective history of our city. Many stories and archives: neighbourhood personalities, family stories, industrial adventures, cultural and artistic dynamics of the neighbourhood, of educational institutions, fall into oblivion due to a lack of documented work on their archives. By launching this call for projects, L’Observatoire wants to reactivate all these marginal stories through a collective investigation involving artists, researchers and citizens.

The Archives of the Future project, developed within the framework of the Collective Museum, activates these questions: which archives for tomorrow? How to prepare today the possibility of archives of the future? What imaginary world should be created around the Archives of the Future of the city of Casablanca?

By acting on the contemporary and producing projects aimed at reactivating private and public archives, L’OBSERVATOIRE wishes to develop a culture of archives and their use for a history of the city told from below.

1. FOUR SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

Proposals should :

1.1  Contribute actively to the effort to research, collect, reactivate and restore the memory of Casablanca's places, including family histories, neighbourhoods, everyday objects and neighbourhood characters.

1.2  Understand a series of regular participatory workshops with a content of activities, a timetable for carrying them out and aimed at a target audience.

"Workshop" means any participatory form that actively involves its target audience in the collective collection and implementation of the project. These workshops may involve: artists, researchers, students, young people from local associations and/or inhabitants of the target neighbourhood(s).  Here are some examples of projects already accepted in the first three calls for projects: www.atelierobservatoire.com/musee-collectif

1.3  Understand a form/final/deliverable that will be permanently exhibited in the Collective Museum of Casablanca. For example: to think about the possibilities of publication, distribution, space or scenography from the collected archives.

1.4.  Be carried out between March 2020 and 31 July 2020.

Will be highly privileged:

  • Projects that include a field survey mechanism.

  • Projects that rely on private/institutional/personal archives to which the project leader already has access and use rights.

  • Innovative projects - in their form or concept - led by a duo (artist/researcher) combining art and research, and proposing a working methodology that clearly allows the involvement of the inhabitants in the research and creation process.

2. BUDGET

A research/production grant of 10,000.00 to 25,000.00 dirhams (including stamp and production budget) will be allocated to the selected projects. This grant may cover all or part of the overall budget of the submitted project. L’Observatoire reserves the right to determine the amount of the production grant and the corresponding proposed fees.

Travel/transport costs are not covered, however accommodation may be considered at the association's headquarters subject to space availability.

The Budget must be broken down between Fees and Production Costs:

  • Fees: the stamps represent an indemnization of the participatory workshops on the following basis: 500.00 MAD for a 3h session or 1,000.00 MAD for a 6h session.

  • Production costs: all costs related to the production of the participatory workshops and the deliverable for the Collective Museum. Not taken into account: the costs of accommodation, transport and food for the duration of the project.

Important: The project leader is responsible for the budget for the entire duration of the project. He/she will count on the support and guidance of the project leaders and the administrator of the association.

The projects selected by the jury will be an integral part of the Collective Museum of Casablanca, supervised and accompanied by Mohamed Fariji, artistic director of L’Atelier de l’Observatoire.

3. PROJECT SELECTION PROCESS

DEADLINE FOR SENDING FILES: 23 February 2020 at midnight (Casablanca time).

4. APPLICATION PROCESS

We invite project leaders to send us their proposals:

1. The completed application form. (google form)

2. By email: attach any additional material deemed useful for the evaluation of the project: visuals, videos or other material over 100 MB per wetransfer before 9 February 2020 (midnight) with your name in the subject line of the message to: candidatures.museecollectif@gmail.com

3. It is possible to submit a group application, specifying the name of the main project leader. Collective and interdisciplinary projects are welcome.

4. Applications may be submitted in Arabic (classical or darija), French or English.

5. TERMS OF REFERENCE

In order to help you in the preparation of your application, here are a few questions to ask yourself about the 4 main selection criteria of the jury:

Participatory workshop: Does the project propose participatory workshops involving a target audience and/or inhabitants of different districts of Casablanca associations and/or artists of the city? What will be the pedagogical content of these workshops? How could these workshops help me in my project, in terms of the collection process? How can I involve a target audience in the development of my project?

Tip: Participatory workshops should accompany the work of the project leader and not be an additional burden in his work.

Collection: Does the project propose a concrete result (output) that can be exhibited in the Collective Museum? What form can this output take (objects, videos, publications, photos, cartography, sound collection, installation, performance etc...)? Do I have a technical and theoretical mastery of the form that the final product can take? What is the artistic (or research) tool/medium that I master best and that I can propose in my collection work?

Neighbourhood memory: Does my project allow me to start collecting history(ies), stories, individual or collective narratives, archives, photographs, memories, collections, etc. from Casablanca neighbourhoods?

Societal impact: Could the project have an impact on society? Could there be concrete results on the participants and on the inhabitants of the neighbourhood? (acquisition of new skills, new perspectives, etc.)
